In 2014, Nikki Layson was crowned the SFU Entrepreneur of the Year for his business, UMI (Urinary Metabolite Indicator). UMI is developing a device that uses metabolites found in the body to help prevent muscle injury. Nikki participated in the June 2014 U.S. Embassy Startup Weekend and developed this idea into a business in only 56 hours over the weekend.
In 2013, Maryam Sadeghi was crowned the SFU Entrepreneur of the Year for her business, MetaOptima Technology, Inc. MetaOptima is a health technology company that focuses on Digital Health Solutions, Skin Cancer Prevention and Diagnosis. Its product, MoleScope, is a thumb-sized microscope designed to use with a smartphone to collect and manage images and, if necessary, send them to specialist to determine whether further examination or treatment is required.
Michael Cheng: Witty Cookie
The fifth annual SFU Entrepreneur of the Year crowned Michael Cheng, founder of Witty Cookie, with the 2012 title. Witty Cookie, a subscription based webservices firm, offers affordable web design, hosting and maintenance, as well as SEO and video production. Michael was also recognized as the Surrey Board of Trade’s “Top 25 Under 25” and Maclean’s “Future Leader of Canada”. Additionally, he has gone on to be part of the Next 36 cohort for 2013.
Matias Marquez: Buyatab Online Inc.
In 2011, Matias Marquez, founder of Buyatab Online Inc., was named the 2011 SFU Entrepreneur of the Year. Buyatab Online Inc. provides small and enterprise-sized merchants with the ability to sell instant gift cards online through an easy-to-implement online platform. In 2012, Marquez was named the Western ACE Regionals Student Entrepreneur Champion and participated in the ACE Nationals Student Entrepreneur Championship.
Jordan Gutierrez: Libreria LEO
In 2010, Jordan Gutierrez, founder of Libreria LEO, won the third annual SFU Student Entrepreneur of the Year. Gutierrez founded an online medical textbook store similar to Amazon that sells books to doctors across Latin America. After winning SEY 2010, he went on to win the 2011 BC Student Entrepreneur of the Year, and placed 2nd in the 2011 ACE Nationals Student Entrepreneur Championship. In November 2011, Gutierrez participated in the Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year.
Benjamin Brown-Bentley: Adrenaline Productions
In 2009, the second annual SFU Student Entrepreneur of the Year competition discovered 20-year old entrepreneur, Ben Brown-Bentley. Founder of Adrenaline Productions, an event production and promotions company that offers unique party experiences across Vancouver, Brown-Bentley went on to become the Surrey Board of Trade’s Student Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010. He was also recognized as the Surrey Board of Trade’s “Top 25 Under 25.”
Milun Tesovic: Metrolyrics
In 2008, our first annual SFU Student Entrepreneur of the Year competition discovered Milun Tesovic, founder of Metrolyrics, a music lyrics database that specializes in providing visitors with information on the latest news, songs, and more. His website draws more than 45 million monthly visitors. After winning SEY in 2008, he moved on to win the 2009 BC Student Entrepreneur of the Year award, as well as being crowned the Western ACE Regionals Student Entrepreneur Champion and the ACE Nationals Student Entrepreneur Champion in 2010. He was also named the 2010 Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year.
